Ah, video game bosses. They're supposed to be the climactic challenges that test everything you've learned. Sometimes they're epic, fair, and memorable. And sometimes... they're just absolutely infuriating. 😤

In this article, we're rounding up the 23 most annoying bosses in video games as of 2026. These are the ones that made us throw our controllers, question our life choices, and reluctantly learn every cheap trick in the book just to survive. Do any of these ring a bell? Let's dive in!

What Makes a Boss "Annoying"?

Before we get into the list, let's be clear: there's a big difference between a difficult boss and an annoying one. Annoying bosses tend to do one or more of these:

  • Change their attack patterns unpredictably mid-fight
  • Add long delays to their attacks just to punish your muscle memory
  • Buff themselves out of nowhere
  • Summon additional enemies to distract you
  • Trigger a second or third phase that resets the whole encounter
  • Heal themselves during the battle
  • Actually flee and make you chase them down

Keep these in mind as we go through the list. Let's go! 🎮

1. Genichiro Ashina – Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice

Genichiro is the game's way of telling you loud and clear: "This is Sekiro. You will play by our rules." He's the wall that separates players who understood the deflect mechanic from those who simply refused to learn it. His lightning attacks, drawn-out combos, and sudden second form caught so many players completely off guard. He's not unfair—but the first time you face him, he absolutely feels that way.

2. The End – Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater

The End is one of the most creatively designed bosses in gaming history—and one of the most patience-testing. This ancient sniper forces you to hunt him across a massive, sprawling jungle map while he's camouflaged and quietly hunting you back. If you run low on rations or make too much noise, you're already losing. He's methodical, evasive, and will drain every bit of your stealth patience. Some players literally waited days in real time to outlast him. 😅

3. Orphan of Kos – Bloodborne

The screeching nightmare at the end of The Old Hunters DLC, and many players' pick for FromSoftware's most unhinged creation. The Orphan is erratic in a way that defies muscle memory—wild leaps, placenta-club slams (yes, really), and a Phase 2 lightning tantrum that covers the whole beach. He doesn't fight with patterns; he fights with pure rage. 🌊

For gamers who love challenge, this is one of their personal favorites! Watch this video, so you can see how aggressive this boss - and definitely very satisfying to beat too!

4. Vergil – Devil May Cry 3

Dante's twin brother, fought three separate times, each one meaner than the last. Vergil punishes button-mashing with instant Judgement Cuts, teleports behind you mid-combo, and heals his Devil Trigger while you panic. On higher difficulties he's practically a mirror match against someone better than you. You cannot defeat me with such tricks. He's right. 😤

5. Sans – Undertale

The "easiest enemy in the game" turns out to be its hardest boss—if you're cruel enough to trigger him. Sans ignores your invincibility frames, attacks you in the menus, dodges every hit, and poisons you with KARMA. His final move? Doing absolutely nothing, forcing you to wait until your own impatience kills you. A boss fight designed to make you feel bad for even trying. 💀

A character in pixel art named Sans. This boss has punished many gamers and left them in rage mode for months because of his hard to beat antics!

6. Senator Armstrong – Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance

Armstrong doesn't just fight you—he lectures you while fighting you. His nanomachines make him nearly invulnerable for most of the fight, and just when you think you have the upper hand, he regenerates and forces you to rethink your entire strategy. The memes surrounding Armstrong are legendary, but the fight itself is no joke. Only in Metal Gear: Revengeance. 😅

This guys almost made me quit, I had to step back and level up my character, then when I fought him back, it's the same freakin' hard boss! Try this for yourself, and you'll see!

7. Shadow Okumura – Persona 5

Ask any Persona 5 player about Okumura and watch them physically tense up. This boss sends wave after wave of robotic enemies at you with strict time limits, and if you don't clear each wave fast enough, they respawn. It completely breaks the game's usual pacing and feels wildly out of place in a JRPG that's otherwise very well balanced. The community backlash was real—and it actually led to a difficulty patch.

I had my share of frustrations from fighting this boss. I think it was luck that made me beat this freakingly annoying boss! 😅😆

8. Malenia, Blade of Miquella – Elden Ring

Elden Ring has no shortage of infuriating bosses, but Malenia is in a league of her own—which is why she represents the entire game on this list. She heals herself every time she hits you—even through a block. Her Scarlet Rot buildup, her signature Waterfowl Dance combo (which spawned thousands of YouTube tutorials), and her winged angel Phase 2 make her arguably the hardest boss FromSoftware has ever created. That alone says everything.

9. Homo Margo – Metaphor: ReFantazio

Not the hardest boss in Metaphor—the most annoying one, and players agree. Homo Margo is a pure gimmick fight: your party's strength, gear, and grinding mean almost nothing, because winning is a puzzle, not a battle. Attack it the "normal" way and watch your damage do nothing while it punishes you for trying. In an RPG that rewards preparation, a boss that ignores your preparation entirely is peak frustration. 👁️

10. Nameless King – Dark Souls 3

The Nameless King is an optional boss that nobody had to fight—and yet, every Dark Souls 3 player has a Nameless King horror story. Phase 1 requires you to lock onto the King of Storms (the dragon), not the rider. Phase 2 is a brutal high-speed duel with one of the most aggressive movesets in the game. He buffs his weapon, punishes rolling, and looks spectacular doing all of it. Annoying and cool—a rare combination.

I've had my share of anxiety fighting this guy and his dragon pet. As I recall, I think I've retried 30-40x before I finally defeat him. 🥲😅

11. Psycho Mantis – Metal Gear Solid

No list of annoying game bosses is complete without Psycho Mantis. This boss reads your memory card, comments on your game saves, takes control of your controller, and literally cannot be hit unless you physically switch your controller to Port 2. Before the era of internet guides, countless players were completely stuck on him. He was breaking the fourth wall before that was even a concept. Legendary, genuinely unfair, and iconic. 🎮

I clearly recall with this fight, I can't hit him and I kept bugging Colonel on codec for tips. There's no YouTube to search, and no friend to help. Just me, my PS1, versus this freakingly annoying boss!

12. Sigrun – God of War (2018)

The Valkyrie Queen is an optional boss that's harder than the game's actual final boss—and she knows it. Sigrun has the combined moveset of all eight Valkyries you fought before her, almost no openings, and attacks that delete half your health bar. Players have reported 50+ attempts before finally taking her down. Optional? Technically. Skippable? Your pride says no. 😤

Good thing, I defeated all the other Valkyries because they use the same movements. I was a little used to their attack patterns. However,

13. Lu Bu – Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty

Every Three Kingdoms game has a terrifying Lu Bu, and Wo Long's version might be the worst of them all. He hits like a truck, his halberd combos cover the entire arena, and his fiery horseback charges punish you for simply existing. This is the wall where countless players quietly uninstalled. Do not pursue Lu Bu has never been better advice. 😅

14. Balteus – Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon

Before the nerf, Balteus was the single biggest filter of 2023. This floating fortress fires homing missile swarms that track you around the arena, has a pulse shield you need to break first, and whips out a flaming blade in Phase 2 just to be rude. FromSoftware really put a Souls boss at the end of a mecha game's first chapter and said good luck.

A mech with pointing his weapons at the camera. Baltheus owns so many gatling guns, homing missiles, and weapons that can easily destroy anything in its path

15. Nameless Puppet – Lies of P

The true final boss of Lies of P, and the cruelest fight in the game. Lightning-fast combos, almost no recovery windows, and a Phase 2 that demands near-perfect parry timing after you've already spent everything just getting there. Beautiful, tragic, and absolutely merciless—Pinocchio's story does not end gently. 🤖

16. Raphael – Baldur's Gate 3

The devil himself, fought in his own house, on his own terms. Raphael has over 600 HP, four soul pillars that keep him buffed, legendary actions that fire on your turn, and a squad of cambions backing him up. And the worst part? He has his own villain theme song with lyrics about how he's going to beat you—and it absolutely slaps. Losing to him while he sings about it is a special kind of annoying. 🎵

17. Yellow Wind Sage – Black Myth: Wukong

A giant rat sage wielding a wind-cursed blade, and the first true wall of Black Myth: Wukong. He blinds you with sandstorms that literally remove your ability to see the fight, teleports around the arena, and punishes greed with extended combos that just keep going. Half the battle is fighting him—the other half is fighting the weather. 🌪️

18. Eigong – Nine Sols

The final boss of Nine Sols and arguably the hardest 2D boss fight ever made. Three phases, relentless talisman-laced combos, and attack strings that demand frame-perfect parries for minutes at a time. The devs themselves expected most players to need hours on her alone. When the community compares a boss favorably to Malenia, you know you're in trouble.

Watch this video, and see for yourself. (Spoiler alert FYI)

19. Odin – Final Fantasy VII Rebirth

Odin doesn't just fight you—he judges you. Play too defensively, block too much, or take too long, and he'll simply use Zantetsuken and instantly end the entire battle, no matter how much HP you had left. A boss that kills you for playing carefully is a uniquely modern form of psychological torture. 😱

20. Chronos – Hades II

The Titan of Time, and he fights like it. Chronos has two long phases, attacks that flood the entire arena, and a delightful habit of literally stopping time to get free hits in. And because this is a roguelike, every defeat means fighting your way through the whole underworld again just for a rematch. Time heals all wounds—except the ones Chronos gives you. ⏳

21. Simon – Clair Obscur: Expedition 33

The superboss of one of 2025's biggest games, and many players' pick for the hardest boss ever put in a turn-based RPG. Simon has three phases, attacks that drop your HP to 1, shield steals, and combos so long you'll forget whose turn it is. He can even remove fallen allies from the battlefield entirely. The devs saw players mastering him—and patched him to be harder. Tomorrow comes, and so does the pain. 🎨

22. Libra, Creature of Night – Elden Ring Nightreign

Nightreign's resident deal-maker is annoying by design. Libra inflicts madness, corrupts the arena with damaging sludge, and offers you cursed "bargains" before the fight even starts. His Everdark variant goes further, summoning mimics that copy you and your teammates—so you're essentially fighting your own squad. A boss that gaslights you. Literally. 🌑

23. Groal the Great – Hollow Knight: Silksong

The most complained-about boss in the most anticipated indie game of all time. Before Groal even shows his face, you fight six waves of enemies. The arena? Tiny platforms over poisonous water that drains the silk you need to heal. Die, and you get the worst runback in the game as a bonus. Groal isn't the hardest boss in Silksong—he's just the most annoying, and that's exactly why he closes this list. 🪲

In Summary

These 23 bosses have one thing in common: they made us better gamers by forcing us to adapt, retry, and eventually overcome. Whether it's Malenia's lifesteal, Odin's instant judgment, Simon's endless phases, or Groal's poison swamp—each fight is memorable for a reason.

Scrolling at the one by one makes my blood boil, and is telling me to redownload the game and repeat the satisfying feeling of beating the hell out of them. ✊🔥 But yeah, let's just put it in the past! The good news is, I was able to overcome and beat them!

Did I miss a boss that drove you absolutely crazy? Drop it in the comments! I'd love to hear your stories. 😄
