Microsoft announced the Xbox pc game pass price increase. It's now here! Is it a good or a bad deal? Let's discover here.

A few months ago, Microsoft announced that they would be increasing the monthly fee for the Xbox game pass. And that also includes game passes on PC.

Earlier, I received this email from Microsoft. I wasn’t paying that much attention to the email because it’s Sunday, and I just marked these messages as read.

Beginning October onwards, the new rate will take effect. Please see the image below:

How much is the game pass increase?

It varies depending on what platform you are using as well as what country you’re playing in. Here in the Philippines, my monthly fee is from PHP 119 and had a minor jump to PHP 175. So that’s PHP 56, or a dollar increase!

If you wish to check your rates, please visit the official Microsoft Xbox website.

Is it worth subscribing to the PC Game Pass?

You bet! The PHP 175 is just equivalent to one cup of coffee! With that amount, you get access to hundreds of games. In addition to that, the Day One release is also amazing! I got to play some games that are very expensive if bought separately.

I cannot emphasize it more, but yes, it really is worth it! 🙂

All you need is a decent PC build and a fast internet connection so you can download and install the games anytime you want! Please take note that the hardware requirements may vary depending on the game you wish to play, but I believe investing in a decent GPU and plenty of storage will enable you to maximize its features!

Does having a PC game pass subscription save me money?

I don’t need to answer this question, but allow me to address it. I believe numbers don’t lie, so let’s do some math!

Microsoft PC Game Pass 1 Year Subscription

PHP175 x 12 months = PHP2,100

Access to over hundred games, EA play, and great day one releases.

A brand new game:

P2,699-P2,999. Sometimes it’s PHP 3,000 or above.

Access to one physical game or digital game.

It is still cheaper, right? 😀

Game Pass subscribers are just “renting” games. They have no control over the library.

Yes, this is a valid statement. It is true that we don’t have much access to the library. If Microsoft says they will be pulling out the game, then the subscribers of that game will not have access to it.

My take on this is—that’s okay. The same concept applies to streaming services like Netflix, Disney Plus, HBO Go, etc. We’re all “renting” and consuming the media that is available in their library.

Also, if I really love the game and Microsoft decides to take it down, then that’s the time I’ll buy it separately. I will play it while it is available in their library and have fun with it.

When is the time you should not subscribe to a PC game pass?

Online subscriptions like PC game passes, PlayStation Plus, and Nintendo Switch Online will be a waste of money if:

  • You don’t have the time to play
  • You have too many video game backlogs in your physical or digital library.
  • You are experiencing video game burnout or a gamer’s block.

In Summary

While the PC game pass price increase will take effect by October onwards, I sincerely believe that being a subscriber is still worth it. The pros far outweigh the cons. Like other games, I also have many games on my backlogs (120+ to be more specific) and am also experiencing the adulting stage, for which I do not have extra time. However, I will continue being a subscriber and enjoy the games available to play!

For me, it’s better to have an abundance of choices rather than not having the option of selecting and playing the game whenever I need it.

How about you? Let’s discuss this in the comments section!
