Introduction
We live in an era where we have an abundance of video games. Many of these games etched a memory in our childhood. There are memorable video game protagonists and antagonists that, even though decades have passed, we still remember when we hear their names. And because of this, I have created a list of the 75 most memorable video game characters of all time! We grouped these iconic characters into protagonists and antagonists. Yes, even bosses are remarkable too!
Please note the following:
The list is composed of characters from the PS1 era to the present, and there are tens of thousands of games from different platforms, so I may have missed someone remarkable. Please be forgiving, lol! 😄😅
The list is in any order. There's no ranking factor made here; we just listed those characters who are etched in my memory. I will keep on updating this article. The number right now is 75, but over time it will grow as we discover more memorable characters in the future.
Some of you may have missed playing the game - spoiler alert! Sorry about that! Enough with the pleasantries, and let's get this thing going!
Video Game Protagonists
1. Solid Snake
I first encountered Solid Snake when I was in high school. He is the main character in the legendary PS1 game Metal Gear Solid. We were at a computer shop and about to play the LAN game Red Alert 2: Yuri's Revenge with my friends when I heard another gamer playing this fantastic game.
The epic alert sound and game 5-second game-over scene caught my attention. Afterward, I then ask the owner what that game was, which was the beginning of the day.
Even today, people know Solid Snake, Big Boss, and other epic characters of the Metal Gear Franchise. This game is truly a gem, and I look forward to seeing another Kojima quality!
2. Dante - Devil May Cry
If you don't know Dante, he is one of the DMC franchise's protagonists and the most playable character in most games.
Dante made an impression when I watched his scene on DMC3 when he destroys demons while eating pizza. That scene was hilarious and unique!
Devil May Cry offers fun hack-and-slash gameplay mixing it with comedy and a compelling story! It is a must-play!
3. Joel - The Last of Us
Joel Miller is one of the most famous video game characters today, thanks in large part to HBO's successful series adaptation of this game.
Joel is brutal to enemies but gentle as a father figure to Ellie. The Last of Us game was also very successful in being initially released on PS3 and has undergone remasters on PS4 and PS5.
The Last of Us Part 2 is also epic; you should play it! I won't put any spoilers here, but if you want a deep and heart-aching story, then play this freakin' awesome game!
4. Ellie Williams - The Last of Us
Ellie is also one of the most memorable characters of all time. Her role in the story is one of the real deal because she is the only immune person, and the doctors could create a cure for the pandemic at the cost of her life. Ellie is also the main protagonist in The Last of Us Part 2.
A gentle heads up, she swears a lot (literally), so if you're playing a game or watching the series, then you're in for a treat, lol! :D
5. Geralt of Rivia - The Witcher 3
Geralt of Rivia is the main character in the Witcher series. He is a monster hunter with special abilities who travels around, taking on jobs to defeat dangerous creatures. He has silver swords and unique physical features, like white hair and cat-like eyes. Geralt is a complicated character with solid values, a problematic love life, and often gets involved in political and social problems.
Playing Geralt gives me the feeling that I am playing Batman Arkham Series, but with superpowers. The game is also solid when it comes to storytelling, that's why it is a must to grab one of The Witcher 3: GoTY versions.
6. Kratos - God of War Series
Kratos is the main character in the God of War series. He is a mighty Spartan warrior who seeks vengeance against the gods of Greek mythology after they betray him. Kratos is known for his brutal combat skills and the iconic Blades of Chaos, fiery blades attached to chains he wields in battle. He uses this and other weapons he finds to slay other gods and mythical monsters. Because of these games, Kratos became one of the most memorable video game characters of all time.
In the game released last 2018, his son Atreus enters the scene, and they travel through the realm of Norse mythology. Kratos and his family have settled in a new land, attempting to leave his past behind.
However, when Kratos' wife dies, he and Atreus embark on a journey to fulfill her dying wish: to scatter her ashes at the top of the highest peak in the realm. Along the way, they encounter monsters, and other characters, including Baldur, who is pursuing them for unknown reasons.
The story continues on God of War: Ragnarok, released last November 2022.
This bald and always angry God of War has etched in my memory because of his epic boss battles and how he slays them after the grueling boss fight. The father-and-son story was remarkable because I'm also a father, and I can relate to the hardships and sacrifices he's making for Atreus.
7. Link - Zelda Breath of the Wild
Link is the hero in the Legend of Zelda video game series. He's a brave and skilled warrior who saves Princess Zelda and his kingdom from the bad guy, Ganon. He uses swords, shields, and magic to defeat his enemies and always perseveres, even in the most challenging situations.
Zelda Breath of the Wild is one of the most successful games released on Nintendo Switch. Once you start playing this game, you won't notice how time flies because of the enormous open map and many things to explore.
Oops, and Tears of the Kingdom is now out! Another game to be enjoyed by Zelda game lovers!
8. Mario - Super Mario franchise
Who doesn't know this dude? Super Mario is a plumber, and he is tasked with jumping or blasting goombas and Koopa Troopa with his flame, and his overall mission is to save Princess Peach (as usual) from Bowser in almost any Super Mario game.
I've known Super Mario since I was little. This game is one of Nintendo's greatest successes. Even the non-gamers recognize this plumber wearing a red jumpsuit. They even built a Super Nintendo World in Japan, and man! I want to visit there with my family!
9. Nathan Drake - Uncharted
Uncharted is a Sony exclusive and one of Naughty Dog's greatest games. The name of the protagonist from this series is Nathan Drake, a treasure hunter that is humorous and very agile. He embarks on a journey with his mentor Sully and his wife, Elena Fisher, to find the greatest treasure.
If you have played one of the games, then I know you understand why Nate is listed here. If you haven't, you're missing out on a lot in gaming!
10. Ryu - Street Fighter
The Street Fighter game has plenty of memorable characters, but let’s just pick the most loved character here - which is Ryu.
I remember Street Fighter when I was a teen. It was first made available in arcades, and this guy, Ryu, is by far the most remarkable character in this franchise. Whenever I hear the word "Street Fighter," this dude flashes into my mind instantly!
Ryu is a Japanese fighter wearing white (by default) with bulky arms. He can shoot Hadouken, perform Shoryuken (uppercut), and Tatsumaki Senpuu Kyaku (hurricane kick). Heck, he can even destroy cars using his bare knuckles and kicks!
11. Cloud - Final Fantasy VII
Cloud Strife is the main protagonist of the world-renowned games: Final Fantasy VII, Final Fantasy VII Remake, and Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children. FFVII was the first game in the series I played on PS1. Even though the graphics back then weren't great, its story and gameplay are unique and engaging!
Thanks to Square for creating a remake a few years back and to Sony for making it available to play on the PS Plus!
What I liked about Cloud is his personality and how he wields a sword almost as big as his body. He also uses and equips different materia to gain access to magic and enhance his skills in battle.
One of the player's hard choices is to choose between his super sexy childhood friend, Tifa, or the sweet and special girl Aerith. Trust me, it's a hard choice!
12. Leon Kennedy - Resident Evil Series
Leon S. Kennedy is this awesome dude from the Resident Evil video game series. He's like the main character in Resident Evil 2, which came out back in 1998. Picture this: a cool government / police officer caught up in a crazy zombie outbreak in Raccoon City during his first day of duty in Racoon city. Talk about being in the wrong place at the wrong time!
Oh, and by the way, Leon isn't just limited to video games. He's popped up in spin-off games, movies, and all sorts of Resident Evil-related stuff. He's made quite a name for himself in the franchise.
13. Commander Shepard - Mass Effect Series
Commander Shepard is one of the most customizable and emotionally resonant protagonists in gaming history. As humanity's greatest soldier tasked with stopping the Reapers, ancient machine-gods that cyclically wipe out all advanced life, Shepard carries the weight of the galaxy across three epic games. What makes the character so special is the depth of player choice: every decision ripples forward, shaping relationships, alliances, and the fate of entire civilizations. Whether you played as MaleShep or FemShep, Shepard's journey is one of the most ambitious and moving in all of gaming. The Mass Effect trilogy is an experience unlike any other, and Shepard is at the heart of all of it.
14. Agent 47 - Hitman
Agent 47 is the iconic bald assassin of the Hitman franchise: calm, precise, and utterly lethal. Genetically engineered to be the perfect killer, 47 travels the world eliminating high-value targets in endlessly creative ways. What makes him so memorable is not just his cold efficiency but the darkly comedic freedom the games give you: disguise yourself as a chef, poison the canapés, or push a target off a balcony disguised as a waiter. 47 carries an understated cool that is genuinely compelling, and the World of Assassination trilogy represents the definitive version of a truly iconic gaming character.
15. Sam Fisher - Splinter Cell
Sam Fisher is the definitive stealth operative in gaming, gruff, methodical, and brilliantly voiced by Michael Ironside. As a Third Echelon operative, Fisher navigates dark corridors, laser tripwires, and heavily armed facilities with a patience that rewards careful, deliberate play. His dry one-liners and quiet professionalism made him one of the most iconic voices of the PS2 and Xbox era. Fisher's brand of stealth, punishing, slow-burn, and deeply satisfying, has rarely been matched since. Bring back Sam Fisher, Ubisoft! 🙏
16. John Marston - Red Dead Redemption
John Marston is one of the most compelling protagonists in modern gaming history. A former outlaw trying to earn back his family from a coercive U.S. government, Marston's journey across the dying American frontier is equal parts heartbreaking and heroic. His complexity is what makes him unforgettable: deeply moral yet defined by his violent past, gruff yet tender with his wife and son. His story's ending remains one of the most impactful moments in all of gaming, and it still hits hard years later. Red Dead Redemption without John Marston simply would not exist.
17. Deacon 'Deek' St. John - Days Gone
Deacon St. John is a motorcycle club member and drifter trying to survive in a post-apocalyptic Pacific Northwest overrun by Freakers, which are feral zombie-like infected humans. What makes Deek stand out is his genuine emotional depth: a man still grieving his wife, finding meaning in a world that has lost all structure. Days Gone was initially underrated by critics, but players who gave it time discovered a surprisingly rich open-world survival story with one of gaming's more relatable and human protagonists. Deek deserves more recognition than he gets!
18. Soap McTavish - Call of Duty: Modern Warfare
John "Soap" McTavish is one of the most beloved characters in the Call of Duty franchise. Starting as a fresh recruit under Captain Price in the original Modern Warfare, Soap quickly became one of the SAS's finest operators and eventually rose to lead his own team. His partnership with Price is one of the franchise's greatest relationships, and his role across the Modern Warfare trilogy makes him an essential figure in CoD lore. Just hearing the name "Soap" is enough to bring back memories for anyone who grew up with these games.
19. Deckard Cain - Diablo Series
"Stay a while and listen!" If you played any Diablo game, that phrase is permanently burned into your memory. Deckard Cain is the wise scholar who guides players through the lore of Sanctuary across multiple games, always ready to identify your items and share his vast knowledge of demonic history. Beyond his utility as an NPC, Cain is a genuine emotional anchor of the franchise. His fate in Diablo III hit longtime fans particularly hard, and his legacy as the series' most beloved support character is firmly secured.
20. Jim Raynor - StarCraft
Jim Raynor is the heart and soul of the StarCraft universe. A former Confederate marshal turned rebel commander, Raynor fights for freedom against overwhelming odds with unwavering moral conviction, even when the entire galaxy seems to have abandoned those values. His complicated history with Kerrigan is one of the most emotionally rich storylines in RTS history. Seeing their story reach its conclusion in Legacy of the Void is genuinely moving. Raynor proves that a strategy game can have a protagonist as compelling as any JRPG hero.
21. Samus Aran - Metroid
Samus Aran is a true gaming pioneer, one of the medium's first major female protagonists and still one of Nintendo's most iconic characters. A galactic bounty hunter clad in a powerful suit capable of devastating alien threats, Samus has spent decades battling Space Pirates and the horrifying Metroids across some of gaming's most atmospheric adventures. Her reveal as a woman at the end of the original Metroid was a genuine shock for its time, and her stoic, capable presence has inspired generations of players. There is no one quite like Samus.
22. Bruce Wayne / Batman - Batman Arkham Series
The Batman Arkham series gave us arguably the greatest video game version of the Dark Knight ever created. Bruce Wayne is the billionaire genius who channels his personal tragedy into an obsessive crusade against crime, and the Arkham games capture every dimension of that character brilliantly, including the intellect, the intimidation, the loneliness, and the unbreakable moral code. The Arkham games are the benchmark for superhero gaming, and a huge reason they work so well is how faithfully they portray both Bruce and the Bat. A true gaming icon.
What sets the Arkham series apart from other superhero games is how it makes you feel like Batman rather than simply control him. The freeflow combat system is intuitive yet deep, rewarding rhythm and awareness over button mashing, while the detective sequences and gadget use reinforce his identity as the World's Greatest Detective. Kevin Conroy's iconic voice performance ties the whole experience together, giving Bruce Wayne and Batman distinctly different registers that feel completely authentic. Arkham Asylum, Arkham City, and even Arkham Knight each offer something different, but all three are unified by one thing: a Batman who is utterly believable and endlessly compelling.
23. Peter Parker / Spider-Man - Marvel's Spider-Man
Insomniac's Peter Parker is one of the best portrayals of Spider-Man ever put to screen, game or otherwise. Juggling his life as a struggling scientist and New York's beloved neighborhood hero, Peter is relatable, funny, and genuinely heroic in the way the character was always meant to be. The swinging mechanics are phenomenal, but it's Peter's heart that makes the game truly special. His relationships with MJ, Aunt May, and Miles Morales are emotionally grounded, and the game's finale delivers one of the most powerful moments in superhero gaming history.
24. Lara Croft - Tomb Raider
Lara Croft is a true gaming legend and one of the most recognizable characters in the medium's history. The 2013 Tomb Raider reboot reimagined her as a younger, more vulnerable protagonist who grows into her legendary status through adversity and loss, and it worked brilliantly. Her journey from frightened survivor to confident warrior is some of the most compelling character development in recent action-adventure gaming. Both the classic and modern Laras have their merits, but together they represent one of gaming's most enduring and iconic heroes.
25. Victor Sullivan (Sully) - Uncharted Series
Victor "Sully" Sullivan is the lovable mentor and surrogate father of the Uncharted series. A veteran adventurer with a taste for cigars, expensive things, and questionable life choices, Sully has been Nathan Drake's guide and closest companion through four games of globe-trotting action. His banter with Nate is some of the sharpest writing in the series, and beneath all the comedy is a genuine and touching relationship. When Sully is in danger, you feel it, because the game has made you care deeply about this charming old rogue. Not just a sidekick. A legend. 😄
26. Kazuma Kiryu - Yakuza / Like a Dragon Series
Kazuma Kiryu, the Dragon of Dojima, is one of the most beloved protagonists in Japanese gaming history. Despite his yakuza background, Kiryu operates by a strict personal code of honor and consistently goes out of his way to protect ordinary people from harm, even at enormous personal cost. The Yakuza series spans decades of his life, from low-ranking member to living legend, and across all those games his character remains consistent, compelling, and deeply human. Tough, kind, and genuinely cool in a way that transcends genre. Kiryu is simply one of a kind.
27. Trevor Philips - Grand Theft Auto V
Trevor Philips is one of the most memorable characters in Grand Theft Auto history: equal parts terrifying, hilarious, and strangely sympathetic. A former military pilot turned meth cook and arms dealer, Trevor is completely unhinged, and playing as him is an experience unlike any other in GTA V. He does things that make you deeply uncomfortable and then somehow makes you laugh anyway. But beneath the chaos are genuine flashes of loyalty and hurt that give him unexpected depth. Trevor is proof that a villain protagonist can be utterly compelling to spend time with.
28. Lightning (Claire Farron) - Final Fantasy XIII Series
Lightning is the stoic and determined protagonist of the Final Fantasy XIII trilogy. A former soldier driven by the need to protect her sister, she begins the series as cold and focused but gradually reveals deeper layers of vulnerability and compassion across three games. Square Enix designed her as a modern female equivalent of Cloud Strife, and while opinions on the XIII trilogy vary, Lightning herself is a striking and memorable character. Her design and fighting style are among the most iconic in the Final Fantasy franchise.
What makes Lightning compelling beyond her surface-level coolness is the emotional journey she undertakes across three games spanning vastly different settings and tones. In the original XIII, she wears her grief as armor, refusing to let anyone in while fighting to save her sister Serah from an unjust fate. By Lightning Returns, she has evolved into something mythic and quietly devastating, a savior burdened by near-immortality and the weight of a dying world. Few Final Fantasy protagonists are asked to carry that kind of emotional range across multiple games, and Lightning does so with a quiet intensity that rewards players who stayed with the trilogy to its conclusion.
29. Jill Valentine - Resident Evil
Jill Valentine is one of the most iconic heroes in the entire Resident Evil franchise. A former Delta Force operator and S.T.A.R.S. member, Jill has faced the worst bioterrorism threats imaginable, from the Spencer Mansion to Raccoon City, and always comes out fighting. In RE3, she faces the relentless terror of Nemesis alone, and her survival is a testament to sheer grit and resourcefulness. Alongside Chris Redfield, Jill Valentine is the backbone of the early Resident Evil universe and an undeniable gaming legend.
30. Captain Price - Call of Duty: Modern Warfare
Captain John Price is arguably the most iconic character in the entire Call of Duty franchise. Stoic, grizzled, and completely dependable under fire, Price has led players through some of the most memorable missions in the series and its reboots. His iconic beret, moustache, and quietly authoritative presence make him instantly recognizable. His partnership with Soap is one of gaming's great duos, and lines like "The world won't miss him" stick with you long after the credits roll. Price is Call of Duty at its absolute best.
31. Gabriel Belmont - Castlevania: Lords of Shadow
Gabriel Belmont begins the Lords of Shadow saga as a noble warrior of the Brotherhood of Light, fighting to resurrect his murdered wife. He is courageous, faithful, and deeply human, a man who sacrifices everything in the name of love and duty. Yet the world repays his sacrifice with betrayal at every turn, stripping away his humanity piece by piece until nothing recognizable remains. His journey is one of the most heartbreaking origin stories in gaming, and watching a genuinely good man be consumed by darkness makes him one of Castlevania's most compelling protagonists.
32. Jin Kazama - Tekken
Jin Kazama is the central protagonist of the Tekken franchise and one of fighting games' most tragic figures. Carrying the cursed bloodline of the Mishima clan, Jin constantly battles against the Devil Gene inside him, a power that could destroy the world if left unchecked. His relationship with grandfather Heihachi and father Kazuya is one of gaming's most dysfunctional and compelling family dynamics. His fighting style (Mishima karate meets traditional fighting arts) and brooding presence make him the defining face of Tekken.
33. Bayonetta - Bayonetta
Bayonetta is one of gaming's most iconic and stylish protagonists, a powerful Umbra Witch who uses her own hair as a weapon and summons demons to destroy angelic enemies, all while looking impossibly cool. Created by PlatinumGames, she is fearless, witty, and unapologetically over-the-top. The gameplay is as flashy as her personality: chaining combos, dodging at the last second to trigger Witch Time, and finishing enemies with spectacular finishing moves. She is a celebration of spectacle and style, and one of the greatest action game protagonists ever created.
34. Miles Morales - Spider-Man: Miles Morales
Miles Morales is the next generation of Spider-Man, and Insomniac's standalone game gives him a story and character arc worthy of that legacy. A teenager still finding his footing, Miles must defend his Brooklyn community from a corporate threat while honoring Peter Parker's example. His unique Venom-blast and camouflage powers give his gameplay a distinctly different feel, and his genuine warmth and heart make him incredibly easy to root for. Miles Morales proved a new Spider-Man could stand entirely on his own, and then some!
35. Cid - Final Fantasy Series
Cid is not one character but a beloved tradition, a name that appears in nearly every mainline Final Fantasy game, always associated with aircraft, engineering, and being a reliable ally. From gruff airship captains to brilliant scientists to passionate warriors, every version of Cid brings something different to the table. The name has become a promise to Final Fantasy fans: wherever Cid appears, you know you are getting someone skilled, dependable, and memorable. A recurring icon of the franchise.
36. Joker (Ren Amamiya) - Persona 5
The protagonist of Persona 5, known as Joker, is one of the coolest silent protagonists in JRPG history. Sent to Tokyo as a probationer after a false conviction, Joker awakens to his power as a Phantom Thief and leads a team of outcasts who steal corrupt hearts. His design, featuring slicked-back hair, red-lensed glasses, and a black coat, is instantly iconic, and his in-battle persona Arsène is one of the most striking in the game. Joker says almost nothing, yet his presence commands every scene he is in. Style personified.
37. 2B (YoRHa No.2 Type B) - NieR: Automata
2B is one of the most striking and memorable characters in recent gaming history. An android soldier fighting on behalf of humanity against machine lifeforms that have overrun the Earth, she is poised, precise, and seemingly emotionless, though the layers the game reveals beneath that exterior are some of the most affecting in any JRPG. NieR: Automata is a philosophical masterpiece that asks profound questions about purpose, consciousness, and what it means to feel, and 2B is at the center of all of it. Her design is iconic, her combat fluid and exhilarating, and the revelation of her true role in the story hits with the force of a gut punch. One of the most memorable characters of the PS4 era, full stop.
38. Isaac Clarke - Dead Space
Isaac Clarke is an everyman hero, an engineer rather than a soldier, who finds himself aboard the USG Ishimura surrounded by reanimated crew members. His terror is genuine, his resourcefulness born of pure desperation, and his journey through the Necromorph-infested ship is one of gaming's greatest survival horror experiences. In later games, Isaac gains a voice and a fully developed personality, and the psychological toll of everything he has witnessed is palpable. He is a protagonist defined by resilience rather than bravado, and all the more compelling for it.
39. Dracula (Gabriel Belmont) - Castlevania: Lords of Shadow
Dracula, the transformed Gabriel Belmont, is one of gaming's most tragic antagonists. Once a noble warrior who sacrificed everything to resurrect his murdered wife, Gabriel is ultimately rewarded with nothing but betrayal, and his transformation into Dracula is not a fall from grace through weakness or greed but through the complete and utter collapse of hope. As Dracula, he rules with cold resignation rather than a passion for evil, making him a villain who inspires as much pity as fear. The final confrontation between Dracula and his descendants brings the trilogy full circle in a genuinely powerful way, and his weary acceptance of his own darkness is one of gaming's most quietly devastating character conclusions.
40. Lee Everett - The Walking Dead (Telltale)
Lee Everett is one of the most emotionally resonant protagonists in gaming history. A convicted man who becomes the unlikely guardian of a young girl named Clementine during the zombie apocalypse, Lee's journey is about redemption, love, and sacrifice. Watching him grow from a man defined by his past mistakes into a devoted father figure is genuinely moving, and his story's conclusion remains one of the most heartbreaking experiences in gaming. Lee's story doesn't end happily, but it ends beautifully.
41. Morrigan - Dragon Age: Origins
Morrigan is the dark witch of the wilds: cynical, sharp-tongued, and fascinating. As a main companion in Dragon Age: Origins, she challenges the player's assumptions constantly and rejects sentimentality in favor of cold pragmatism. But beneath her hardened exterior is a character with genuine depth and unexpected vulnerability. Her relationship with her mother Flemeth, her philosophy on power and freedom, and her optional romance arc make her one of BioWare's finest creations. She is the companion you argue with and grow to love despite yourself.
42. Ada Wong - Resident Evil 2
Ada Wong is one of the most mysterious and compelling characters in the Resident Evil universe. She first appears in RE2 as a spy who crosses paths with Leon Kennedy, and their complicated dynamic has been one of the series' most enduring storylines. Is she good? Is she bad? Does she actually care for Leon, or is she purely using him? The ambiguity is intentional, and Capcom has always kept her motivations just out of reach, which is exactly what makes every scene she appears in unforgettable. An iconic character in every sense.
43. Zagreus - Hades
Zagreus, son of Hades himself, is one of the most charming and well-developed protagonists the roguelike genre has ever produced. Attempting to escape the Underworld one run at a time, he interacts with an enormous cast of gods, shades, and creatures, and every conversation deepens the world and the relationships within it. The writing in Hades is exceptional, and Zagreus's warmth, wit, and stubborn determination make him genuinely likable even after your hundredth failed escape attempt. A modern classic!
44. Clementine - The Walking Dead (Telltale)
Clementine is one of the most extraordinary character arcs in all of gaming. When we first meet her in The Walking Dead Season 1, she is a young girl sheltering in her treehouse, waiting for her parents to come home. Under Lee Everett's protection, she learns what it takes to survive an apocalypse. By the time Season 4 begins, she has become the protector herself: resourceful, hardened, and deeply compassionate in a world that has done its best to strip that from her. Few characters in any medium grow the way Clementine does across four seasons, and her final story is one of the most emotionally earned conclusions in gaming history.
45. Aloy - Horizon Zero Dawn
Aloy is a fierce, curious, and highly intelligent hunter from a tribal society who discovers that the ruins of the old world hold the key to understanding everything she has been taught to question. Her journey across a post-apocalyptic Earth reclaimed by robotic wildlife is one of the most original settings in modern gaming, and Aloy's inquisitive nature makes her the perfect guide through it. She is capable, compassionate, and driven, a genuinely great protagonist who became an instant icon from her very first game.
46. The Cat - Stray
The nameless cat of Stray is one of the most unexpected protagonists in recent gaming memory. You play as a regular housecat who falls into an underground city populated entirely by robots and must find a way back home. The cat moves and behaves exactly like a real cat, knocking things off shelves, meowing at robots, and squeezing through tight spaces, bringing genuine humor and heart to the story. Stray proved that a wordless, furry protagonist could carry an entire game purely on charm and feline authenticity. An absolutely delightful game! 🐱
Video Game Antagonists
1. Revolver Ocelot - Metal Gear Series
Revolver Ocelot is the master of deception in the Metal Gear universe, a man who has changed sides so many times that even the players lose track of his true loyalties. From his first appearance in Metal Gear Solid as a sadistic torture artist to his final role as the architect of Big Boss's legacy in Metal Gear Solid 5, Ocelot is always ten steps ahead. His triple-cross upon triple-cross plotting is legendary, and by the end of the series it becomes clear that everything, all of it, was part of a plan he was executing across decades. A villain who plays the very long game.
2. Sephiroth - Final Fantasy VII
Sephiroth is arguably the most iconic villain in JRPG history. The silver-haired, one-winged angel was once SOLDIER's greatest hero before discovering the truth of his origins and descending into madness and nihilism. His presence looms over every moment of Final Fantasy VII, and the sense of dread he creates, even in scenes where he barely appears, is masterful. "One-Winged Angel" remains one of gaming's most iconic boss battle themes, and his confrontations with Cloud are among the most epic in the franchise. An all-time great villain.
3. Albert Wesker - Resident Evil Series
Albert Wesker is the cold-blooded traitor who haunts the Resident Evil franchise across multiple games. Originally a S.T.A.R.S. captain who secretly worked for Umbrella, Wesker was injected with a prototype virus that gave him superhuman strength and speed, along with a god complex to match. His calm, theatrical villainy, his sunglasses in every situation, and his ambitions of global domination make him one of the most entertaining antagonists in gaming. His final confrontation in Resident Evil 5 is one of the most bombastic endings the series has ever delivered.
4. Jonathan Irons - Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare
Jonathan Irons is the CEO of Atlas Corporation, the most powerful private military company in the world, and the primary villain of Advanced Warfare. Brilliantly performed by Kevin Spacey, Irons begins the game as an imposing but seemingly benevolent figure before revealing a vision for the world so extreme that only mass destruction can achieve it. His performance elevates the campaign to a level of cinematic quality that most Call of Duty games don't reach. Irons is one of the franchise's most memorable antagonists, full stop.
5. Sarah Kerrigan - StarCraft
Sarah Kerrigan is one of the most tragic figures in the StarCraft universe. Once one of the Terran Dominion's most elite Ghost operatives, she was abandoned on Tarsonis and captured by the Zerg, who transformed her into the Queen of Blades, a hybrid of human intelligence and alien ruthlessness that became the most terrifying being in the galaxy. Her arc across StarCraft and StarCraft II explores themes of identity, revenge, redemption, and what it means to remain human after being fundamentally changed. Kerrigan's story is one of sci-fi gaming's greatest.
6. The Joker - Batman: Arkham Series
Mark Hamill's Joker in the Arkham series is the definitive video game version of the Clown Prince of Crime. Unpredictable, theatrical, and genuinely terrifying beneath the comedy, the Arkham Joker is Batman's perfect foil: chaos to Batman's order, madness to his discipline. His presence in Arkham Asylum and Arkham City is electrifying, and the twist in Arkham City involving his fate is one of gaming's most shocking moments. What makes him truly memorable is the strange, dark intimacy of his relationship with Batman, two men who define each other.
7. Scarecrow - Batman: Arkham Knight
Scarecrow serves as the primary antagonist of Batman: Arkham Knight and proves himself worthy of the role. While most of his Arkham Asylum appearance was terrifying hallucination sequences, Arkham Knight gives Scarecrow a real plan: to expose Batman's identity to the entire world and use his Fear Toxin to bring Gotham to its knees. His philosophical confrontations with Batman about the nature of fear and what drives a hero are some of the game's most compelling moments. Scarecrow uses Batman's greatest weapon, his legend, against him brilliantly.
8. The Arkham Knight - Batman: Arkham Knight
The Arkham Knight is a new, militarized villain created specifically for the game, a mysterious armored figure with a personal vendetta against Batman and a tactical genius that repeatedly outmaneuvers him. His identity is a significant reveal, and while some players saw it coming, it adds a powerful emotional dimension to the conflict. The Arkham Knight commands an army, deploys tanks and drones, and systematically dismantles Batman's defenses throughout the game. He is a villain designed to show that Batman can be broken, and he nearly succeeds.
9. Doctor Octopus (Otto Octavius) - Marvel's Spider-Man
Insomniac's take on Doctor Octopus is one of the best villain reimaginings in superhero gaming. Starting the game as Peter Parker's mentor and friend, Otto Octavius's tragic descent into villainy is portrayed with genuine sympathy and weight. You understand his pain, his frustration, and his desperation even as you fight against him. By the time he becomes the full-blown Doctor Octopus, the emotional stakes are enormous. This is a villain whose conflict with the hero feels personal in the truest sense, not just physical but deeply emotional.
10. Vaas Montenegro - Far Cry 3
Vaas Montenegro is one of the greatest video game villains of the modern era, and his impact is even more impressive given that he appears for a relatively short portion of the game. His charisma, his unpredictability, and his iconic "definition of insanity" speech made him an instant legend. Michael Mando's performance is absolutely electric, giving Vaas a manic energy that makes every scene he is in impossible to look away from. Far Cry 3 without Vaas would be a completely different and significantly lesser game.
11. M. Bison - Street Fighter
M. Bison is the dictator and supreme commander of Shadaloo and the central villain of the Street Fighter franchise. Powered by the mysterious Psycho Power, Bison seeks world domination with cold-blooded efficiency and theatrical flair. His signature double-knee press and psycho crusher attacks are iconic, and his presence looms over the entire SF lore. He has been defeated, destroyed, and resurrected across multiple games, each time returning with renewed menace. Bison is the kind of villain who simply refuses to stay down.
12. Arthas Menethil / The Lich King - Warcraft III / World of Warcraft
Prince Arthas's fall from paladin hero to the frozen Lich King is one of the most compelling villain origin stories in gaming. A prince determined to protect his people at any cost, Arthas crosses one moral line after another until he has nothing left but revenge and emptiness, eventually merging with the Lich King and leading an undead army to threaten all life. His story in Warcraft III is a masterclass in tragic villainy, and his presence in World of Warcraft's Wrath of the Lich King expansion made him an unforgettable antagonist for millions of players.
13. Hitler - Zombie Army Series
Zombie Army takes World War II and asks a wild question: what if Hitler's last desperate gambit was to raise the dead? The undead Führer serves as the ultimate final boss of the series, a grotesque powered-up zombie warlord who channels dark occult energy. It is darkly absurd in the best possible way, and putting a bullet between the eyes of zombie Hitler is one of gaming's most cathartic experiences. The game doesn't take itself too seriously, and that irreverence is exactly the right approach for this kind of villain.
14. The Nameless King - Dark Souls III
The Nameless King is widely regarded as one of the greatest boss fights in the entire Dark Souls series, and that is extraordinarily high praise. A former god of war who forsook his father and sided with the ancient dragons, the Nameless King fights atop a storm cloud on the back of his dragon companion before facing you alone in one of the most intense one-on-one duels in the game. His design is regal and devastating, and the emotion of the two-phase fight, watching him lose his dragon before turning to face you for vengeance, gives him unexpected depth.
15. Genichiro Ashina - Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice
Genichiro Ashina is the sword-wielding lord of Ashina Castle and Sekiro's most recurring antagonist, responsible for some of the most memorable fights in the game. He is desperate, driven, and genuinely tragic: a man doing terrible things to save a kingdom he loves that is already dying. Your battles with Genichiro serve as the game's great skill checks; he defeats most players many times before they earn the right to pass. By the time of your final encounter, the fight carries enormous emotional weight. A worthy and unforgettable opponent.
16. Isshin Ashina - Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice
Isshin Ashina is the final boss of Sekiro and one of the most breathtaking encounters FromSoftware has ever designed. The founder of Ashina, resurrected at the peak of his power by his grandson Genichiro, Isshin fights with everything at his disposal, sword, spear, lightning, and gunfire, in a fight that demands everything you have learned across the entire game. He is ferocious, joyful in battle, and overwhelmingly powerful. Defeating Isshin Ashina is one of the greatest gaming accomplishments in recent memory, and the relief you feel when he finally falls is unforgettable.
17. Malenia, Blade of Miquella - Elden Ring
Malenia is arguably the hardest optional boss in FromSoftware history, and she became a global phenomenon because of it. A demigod ravaged by the Scarlet Rot but kept upright through sheer willpower and martial genius, Malenia fights in two devastating phases and heals herself with every attack she lands. Her iconic opening move, the Waterfowl Dance, killed players millions of times around the world. Yet she is more than a difficulty meme: her story of sacrifice for her brother Miquella is genuinely moving, and her design is hauntingly beautiful. "I am Malenia, Blade of Miquella."
18. Gehrman, The First Hunter - Bloodborne
Gehrman is the final boss of Bloodborne's base game and one of the most emotionally complex encounters FromSoftware has designed. The founder of the Workshop and the first of all Hunters, Gehrman has been trapped in the Hunter's Dream for so long that he has become a prisoner of his own making, at once a kind old man and your captor. When he asks you to accept death and leave the Dream, there is genuine sadness in the confrontation. Fighting him feels wrong in the best possible way. A boss that makes you feel guilty for winning.
19. Baldur - God of War (2018)
Baldur is the main antagonist of the game God of War (2018). His memorable appearance was when he knocked on Kratos' door and started a fight. That few minutes of intense cinematic was memorable because we're not used to seeing Kratos being punched and bullied by others. In
20. Bowser - Super Mario Franchise
Bowser, the King of the Koopas, is Nintendo's most iconic villain and Mario's eternal rival. Despite kidnapping Princess Peach in virtually every Super Mario game, Bowser has evolved into one of Nintendo's most beloved characters overall, far more than just a simple final boss. His enormous shell, fire-breathing fury, and surprising personality depth across spin-off titles like Paper Mario and the Mario RPG games have made him a fan favorite even when he is playing the villain. What Nintendo has achieved with Bowser is remarkable: a character who is simultaneously threatening and lovable, sometimes appearing as a reluctant ally and then returning to his Koopa overlord roots without missing a beat. He is one of the most enduring characters in all of gaming.
21. Sigrun: Queen of the Valkyries - God of War (2018)
Sigrun is the Valkyrie queen in God of War (2018). Sigrun has all the attack patterns of all other Valkyries, and when you encounter her, beware because she has so many tricks up her sleeve! She is an optional boss that only appears when you defeat all the other valkyries.
Fighting Sigrun is more challenging and satisfying if your build with Kratos isn't maxed out yet. I also remember being defeated so many times by this Valkyrie queen, but because of the persistence I learned from playing Soulsborne Sekiro games, I eventually beat her, and the feeling was gratifying!
22. Psycho Mantis - Metal Gear Solid
Metal Gear Solid fans will never ever forget this boss; it is one of the most epic bosses in the PlayStation era!
Psycho Mantis is one of the most inventive bosses in gaming history, not just because of how challenging he is to defeat, but because of how he breaks the fourth wall in ways that still impress players decades later. He reads your memory card, comments on your gaming habits, and makes your controller vibrate to demonstrate his telekinetic power. The only way to actually hurt him is to plug your controller into the second port, preventing him from reading your moves. No boss before or since has used the physical hardware of a gaming console as a core mechanic of its fight, and that alone secures his place in gaming history.
23. Nemesis - Resident Evil 3
Nemesis is the main enemy in the fantastic game Resident Evil 3 Remake. This freak has different forms, and I have a word to describe it - persistent! During the early game, Nemesis will chase you around the town and only stop once you put a few bullets in his body. The best way for this monster to stop is to do a couple of headshots. Make sure you grab the item that it drops, and you run away from it as much as possible because, after a few seconds, Nemesis will come again and chase you.
Nemesis has many forms, like having a rocket launcher, becoming a monster, running through walls, and becoming enormous! Indeed, this monster is remarkable in the game.
24. Goro Akechi - Persona 5
Goro Akechi is one of the most compelling antagonists in the Persona series and a masterclass in JRPG villain writing. Introduced as a charming celebrity detective and natural rival to Joker, Akechi presents himself as the perfect foil to the Phantom Thieves: intelligent, principled, and enormously popular with the public. What unfolds beneath that polished surface is one of Persona 5's most devastating revelations. His true motivations are rooted in abandonment, resentment, and a desperate hunger for recognition that makes him simultaneously despicable and deeply sympathetic. Unlike many JRPG antagonists who feel remote or mythic, Akechi feels achingly human, which is exactly what makes his arc so unforgettable. Persona 5 Royal deepens his story even further, cementing him as one of the most nuanced and heartbreaking antagonists in modern JRPG history.
25. Orphan of Kos - Bloodborne: The Old Hunter's Edition
The Orphan of Kos is the final boss of Bloodborne's Old Hunters DLC and one of the most emotionally unsettling encounters FromSoftware has ever created. Born from the corpse of the Fishing Hamlet's slaughtered Great One, the Orphan enters the world screaming and dragging what appears to be its own placenta as a weapon, and its cries throughout the fight are genuinely haunting. The context of its birth as the product of terrible violence gives the fight a gut-wrenching emotional dimension that few bosses in gaming can match. Defeating the Orphan does not feel like a victory. It feels like the end of something tragic that should never have happened, and that feeling lingers long after the credits roll.
26. Vladimir Makarov - Call of Duty 1-3
Makarov is the main antagonist in the Call of Duty Modern Warfare series. He instigated World War 3 and was the mastermind behind the terrorist attacks.
One of the franchise's most memorable and disturbing missions was "No Russian." PFC. Joseph Allen is an undercover CIA agent and is involved in a mass shooting at a Russian airport to gain Makarov's trust. I want to avoid replaying this scene as the scene is disturbing. But to those who played the Modern Warfare series, the name Makarov is memorable among gamers.
27. Abby Anderson - The Last of Us Part 2
Abby is one of the leading protagonists in the world-renowned game, The Last of Us Part 2. She is also one of the most hated characters in the whole gaming industry. I clearly remember last 2020, when the game was newly released, Abby became viral, and Laura Bailey, the voice actress behind Abby, received so much hate over the role. She also received death threats because of the unforgettable scene in the game's early stages.

28. Leviathan - Dead Space Remake
The Leviathan is one of the most grotesque and visually overwhelming boss encounters in the Dead Space franchise. A massive, plant-like Necromorph that has taken root deep in the USG Ishimura's food storage area, it represents just how completely the Marker's corruption has consumed the ship. The fight takes place in zero gravity, with Isaac scrambling to avoid the creature's toxic projectile blasts while targeting its glowing weak points at the ends of enormous, thrashing tentacles. The sheer scale of the encounter, combined with the deeply unsettling biological horror of its design, makes it one of the most memorable set pieces in survival horror gaming. The Dead Space Remake rendered it with even greater detail and dread, turning what was already a terrifying boss into something genuinely nightmarish.
29. Thor - God of War: Ragnarok
Thor was the son of Odin, the God of Thunder, and the Champion of Aesir. He wields the legendary MjÖlnir and is considered one of Odin's most powerful sons.
Thor appeared in the God of War (2018) secret cinematic, and his character was known when the God of War: Ragnarok was released. During the game's early stages, he and Kratos had an encounter that ended in a stalemate.
To those who haven't played God of War: Ragnarok, you must grab and play one of the copies. It would be better to secure a PS5 first, then play this for complete immersion and experience. You'll love this scene, and Thor is one of the most memorable video game characters of all time!
30. Cyborg Ninja - Metal Gear Solid
To the gamers who first played Metal Gear Solid on PlayStation 1, you would agree that Cyborg Ninja is one of the most epic and memorable video game characters ever. Cyborg Ninja's first appearance is when Solid Snake and Revolver Ocelot are having a duel to save the Darpa Chief. This stealth ninja jumped out of nowhere, cut off Ocelot's hand, and disarmed the bombs.
The next memorable scene is when you're walking in a hallway full of dead soldiers.
Then the epic hand-to-hand combat with Solid Snake comes next. I tried cheating and using FaMas, but Cyborg Ninja retaliated with his sword. I still remember the thrill of not winning here because punching this ninja was so satisfying!
"Make me feel it... Make me feel alive again!"
So here you get the 75+ most memorable video game characters of all time! There are still plenty of iconic characters in the past and upcoming, so we will update this list frequently!
